Gary Heise:
Gary has a B.F.A. in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design. He has studied traditional Chinese painting with the Taiwanese-American artist, Shiou-ping Liao and other masters.

Gary taught brush painting at the East Side Art Center in Pawtucket from 2023-2026, and was artist demonstrator and program director for the Asian Brush Artists Guild (based at the Hammond Art Museum in North Salem, NY) from 2012-2022.

Gary works exclusively in Chinese ink and watercolor on Chinese paper, with a focus on flower and landscape painting. He exhibits regularly at the Rhode Island Watercolor Society, Imago Foundation for the Arts in Warren, RI, and at Studio Hop in Providence.

Materials:  $18 materials fee includes rice paper and handouts for the course. Students can pay the instructor, Gary, on the first day (cash, check, PayPal, Venmo).

If you’re new to Chinese painting/Sumi-e and need brushes, ink and watercolor, Gary will have them for you as well:

    Basic Six-brush set $48
    Marie’s 18-color Chinese watercolor set $23
    Ink $8

    Subtotal $79 + 18 (handouts and xuan paper) = $97
